NOCTURNAL
Nocturnal
For a time we were nocturnal.
Days spent under shielding sheets.
Nights attacked with self-acclaimed invincibility.
The energy keeping the neon signs of the city on,
Bare only a fraction to what we conduct
As our shoes stomp the streets.
Our eyes bright and wide,
Watching another world beyond us unfold.
This world of glowing street lights reflected in puddles.
Vacant streets led us as we danced.
Our own cosmos in shades of
Red
Green
Yellow
Red
Green
That was the night we made our own solar system.
You were the sun,
As I revolve myself around you
A car is coming.
Let’s go back to the sidewalk.
I turned but you pulled me back.
The distant headlight gleaming in your eyes,
Shimmering onto a sea of molten dirty caramel.
You didn’t move so I did the same:
Motionless and found.
The car wasn’t slowing.
I tried to pull you away; you wouldn’t budge.
“You feel that?”
I felt an oddly concerning euphoric freedom;
A worrisome ecstatic blend-
Yet safe, I was with you, how could I not be?
The car, too close for comfort.
Yet comfort stayed with you and rubbed off on me.
“This is how I feel
When I’m with you
Every night.”
You finally moved back.
I still feel the wind from that car.
That rush.
The hairs on my back stand up as waves
Of bittersweet adrenaline wash over me.
All the while you kissed my numbed lips.
My lips, lost and incapable of sensation
Yet, that didn’t stop me from feeling you
